Nintendo 3DS (ニンテンドー3DS, Nintendō Surī Dī Esu, abbreviated to 3DS) is a portable game console produced by Nintendo, first released on February 26,The Nintendo 3DS, the 3D successor to the hyper-popular Nintendo DS console, is selling like gangbusters, company reps said today in a statement. According to Nintendo, “US day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history.” The company promised more detailed numbers in coming days.

But the Nintendo 3DS launch has been far from smooth. As Adam Rosenberg over at DigitalTrends notes today, not long after the 3DS was released, users began reporting a total system shutdown affectionately known as the “black screen of death.” Nintendo says affected users should download the latest system update; barring that, they should phone up the Nintendo customer service hotline.

Nintendo sold its entire allotment of 400,000 Nintendo 3DS units during its February 2011 release in Japan amid reports of lines and pre-order sellouts.^[51] The 3DS sold 374,764 units during the launch weekend of 26th February. Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle was the best selling 3DS launch title, in which 119,591 of copies were sold at launch, and it took third spot of the best selling title along with other system titles.While no numbers were revealed for US sales, around 140,000 pre-orders were registered in the UK, which was more than for the Wii.

Nintendo announced that first day sales for the Nintendo 3DS in the US were the largest of any Nintendo handheld device in history.
